Plan a green wedding

This weekend, Visit Britain is expecting more than one million visitors to reach London for the royal wedding between Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Furthermore, the global audience estimated to gather around the live broadcast may reach a record two billion people. Weddings are the topic to talk about!

Our twitter stream is suggesting several destinations for your upcoming wedding and honeymoon. To round it up, here are some tips and resources for Earth lovers planning to tie the knot soon.

For the majority of couples, weddings are the third single expenditure in their lifetimes, right after their home and car. If you want to reflect your commitment to sustainability, you should:

  • Consider a destination city that is close to where the majority of your guests live.
  • Consider an outdoor ceremony at a venue interested in sustainability, like parks or protected areas.
  • Consider having the ceremony and reception at near locations to avoid unnecessary driving.
  • Recommend green lodging options and airline carriers that have an environmental policy.
  • Help guests arrange car pools from lodgings to the wedding venue. Use hybrid vehicles, if available.
  • Send invitations by email and create a website for the wedding details.
  • Consider registering for or requesting green gifts, if possible, locally produced.
  • Serve fresh, locally produced, organic, and sustainably harvested food and beverages. If possible, offer a vegetarian and a meat option per meal.
  • Reduce waste by using reusable dishware, utensils, napkins, tablecloths, and bulk dispensers for condiments. Plan to compost or donate excess food.
  • Decorate with organic or dried flowers from a local florist or at a local farmer’s market.
  • Buy or rent a vintage dress, tuxedo, or suit made out of organic cotton, silk, or hemp.
  • Encourage your guests and clean-up staff to recycle and provide convenient recycling bins for collecting paper, cardboard, aluminium, plastic, etc., in common areas.

These tips are just the starting point. If you want more information, you can read an eco-friendly wedding guide and get more ideas for a green wedding. And when you are planning accommodations for your guests, consider us. You can even get a special page for your wedding!

Wow! Green Wedding. I like that concept. Very environment friendly! But maybe after the wedding the redcliffe accomodation is perfect since they are also environment-friendly. A lot of trees and plants.
